India has a strong and expanding postgraduate medical education system, with 645 medical institutes offering a total of 57,503 PG medical seats across Government and Private colleges. Of these, 349 institutes are Government medical colleges, providing 29,596 PG seats, while 296 Private medical colleges offer 27,907 PG seats.

The availability of PG medical seats differs considerably from one state to another. Karnataka leads with 7,705 PG seats, followed by Maharashtra with 6,487 seats, Uttar Pradesh with 5,505 seats, Tamil Nadu with 5,443 seats, and Telangana with 3,643 seats. These states have a comparatively larger number of medical institutions and therefore offer a wider range of postgraduate opportunities for NEET PG aspirants.

On the other hand, smaller states and certain Union Territories have a relatively limited postgraduate medical education network. Regions such as Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Sikkim, Tripura, and Mizoram have fewer medical institutions and consequently a smaller number of PG seats.
